A biodegradable spun fleece is made of thermoplastic continuous filaments which adhere to each other at their crossing points without binder. The filaments include at least 50 wt.% biodegradable polycaprolactone with a molecular weight of 35,000 to 70,000. A process of manufacturing the spun fleece does not require an additional consolidation step after deposition of the spun filaments. The use of a binder for the consolidation of the fleece is obviated. The polymer material can be spun in conventional melt spinning arrangements. The polycaprolactone material can be used in admixture with other materials which either cannot be melt spun in pure form or are not biodegradable and the resulting polymer mixture, surprisingly, can be melt spun and is biodegradable.
