A pulsating rotary sprinkler head securable to a water supply apparatus, such as a conventional sprinkler base, includes a nozzle for distributing water and a throttling device for producing a non-circular distribution pattern. The preferred embodiment of the sprinkler head comprises a conventional spring- loaded hammer and discharge nozzle assembly, with a unique non-rotating bushing having longitudinally opposed upper and lower ends and an internal passageway therebetween, said lower end being adapted for attachment to said water supply apparatus, and defining an inlet in fluid communication with said passageway and said nozzle. A central tubular member disposed within the passageway in the bushing also has an upper end communicating with the nozzle and a lower end communicating with the inlet, with a plurality of radial openings formed in the lower ends of the bushing and tubular member for cyclically varying the flow rate of water passing through the inlet and discharged through the nozzle, thereby creating the non-circular water distribution pattern. A fixed horizontal plate and a pointer rotatable with the nozzle are preferably included as visual indicators of the orientation of the discharge pattern to facilitate the proper placement of the sprinkler.
