The present invention provides a method for protecting proteins against aerosolization-induced degradation and loss of protein activity. The aerosolized proteins are stabilized by adding a water soluble polar organic compound, such as polyethylene glycol, or a surfactant to the aqueous solution prior to aerosolization. The present invention further provides a stabilized aqueous protein solution containing a polar organic compound or surfactant and a system for aerosolizing the stabilized aqueous protein-containing solution.
