A method is described for making aluminum reduction cell components, e.g. cathodes having stabilized surfaces, which comprises mixing together a carbonaceous material, TiB2 and up to 25% by weight of a finely divided additive consisting of a combination of two intimately mixed compounds and forming the mixture into a cell component, wherein at least a first of the two compounds has a higher melting temperature than the baking temperature. When the cell component is contacted with molten aluminum, the aluminum reacts with the additive to form a dense phase at the surface of the cell component, having low solubility in aluminum.

La présente invention a trait à un procédé pour la fabrication de composants de cuves d'électrolyse de réduction d'aluminium, par exemple des cathodes à surface stabilisées, comportant en mélange une matière carbonée, du TiB¿2? et jusqu'à 25 % en poids d'un additif finement divisé constitué d'une combinaison de deux composés en mélange intime et formant le mélange dans le composant de cuve, au moins un premier des deux composés ayant une température de fusion supérieure à la température de cuisson. Lors de la mise en contact du composant de cuve avec l'aluminium en fusion, l'aluminium réagit avec l'additif pour former une phase dense à la surface du composant de la cuve ayant une faible solubilité dans l'aluminium.
