Transgenic plants that produce high levels of polyhydroxybutyrate and methods of producing them are provided. In a preferred embodiment the transgenic plants are produced using plastid transformation technologies and utilize genes which are codon optimized. Stably transformed plants able to produce greater than 10% dwt PHB in tissues are also provided.

Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, ces plantes transgéniques sont issues de technologies de transformation de plaste et utilisent des gènes à codon optimisé. L'invention concerne également des plantes transformées de manière stable, capables de produire plus de 10% de PHB de leur poids à sec dans les tissus.
