ABSTRACT The invention relates to stable isoforms of creatine kinase (CK) subunits. Recombinant subunits may be expressed in cells cotransfected with DNA encoding one or more wild-type creatine kinase subunit B, wild-type subunit M or mutant M CK subunits. The subunits and dimeric species produced by association of the monomeric units are indistinguishable in electrophoretic mobility from creatine isoforms produced in vivo. The various isoforms are useful as analytical standards in commonly used tests to determine the presence of creatine isoforms. The disclosed isoforms have good storage stability and are stable under conditions employed for nondenaturing electrophoresis.
