Stable aqueous dispersions of polyamide resin in water comprise a surfactant and at least one amino acid of formula (I), or an anionic or cationic salt thereof, wherein "R" represents an alkylene, alkenylene or arylene group of one to ten carbon atoms and "Y" is hydrogen or a polar or non-polar ionic or non-ionic substituent, in an amount effective to improve the stability of said aqueous dispersion. Polyamide resins have properties that render them useful in a variety of applications, including coatings, adhesives and printing inks. Owing particularly to the high melting points and the insolubility of polyamide resins, however there have been difficulties in the prior art in using polyamide resins in these applications. The stable aqueous dispersions of the present invention facilitate these uses of polyamide resins.
