64839-1240 STAGE PROGRAMMABLE LIGHT SEQUENCER FOR A TOY ABSTRACT A light sequencer for a toy having a simple means for individually varying the on and off time of each stage of the chain or ring. Each stage comprises a light controlling amplifier/switch whose gain is individually controlled by a hysteresis element. When the voltage presented across a hysteresis element prior to breakdown, is below its set breakdown voltage, the hysteresis element is in its' non-conductive state, thereby causing the amplifier/switch to have negative gain. The light being controlled receives no voltage and is not lit. When the voltage presented across a hysteresis element prior to breakdown equals or exceeds its set breakdown voltage, the hysteresis element 'fires' into a highly-conductive state, thereby causing the amplifier/switch to have very high gain. The light being controlled receives its full voltage and is lit. The hysteresis element remains in its highly- conductive state until the voltage presented across it drops below its recovery voltage level. When this occurs, the hysteresis element switches back to its non-conductive state, thereby causing the amplifier/switch to have negative gain. The light being controlled receives no voltage and is not lit. The difference between the breakdown or 'firing' voltage and the recovery voltage is the hysteresis factor. Having this hysteresis factor control the gain of an amplifier/switch enables the use of a simple Resistor-Capacitor circuit in between the stages to control the on and off times of each stage in the chain, and consequently the period time of the chain or loop time of a ring. The resistor and 64839-1240 capacitor values of each stage can be made different from its peers, thereby causing a pseudo-random appearing affect, thereby provoking greater interest on the part of the viewer.
