ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Carbonaceous solids are partially gaified in a primary fluidized bed gasification zone to form an effluent gas containing entrained fines, including carbon-containing fines. The entrained fines are separated from the effluent gas and then introduced into a secondary fluidized bed gasification zone which contains a plurality of magnetizable particles, at least a portion of the fluidized bed within said secondary gasification zone being stabilized by the application of a magnetic field. Unconverted solids from the primary gasification zone, e.g., char and ash, are also introduced into the secondary gasification zone and, along with the entrained fines, are retained and gasified therein. Stabilizing the fluidized bed within the secondary gasification zone prevents loss of the carbonaceous solids from said zone which, in turn, results in substantially complete gasification of the carbon present in the carbonaceous solids feed introduced into the primary gasification zone. In a preferred embodiment, the fluidized bed within the secondary gasification zone contains a plurality of separate discrete magnetizable particles and is stabilized by the application of a substantially uniform magnetic field oriented colinear with the direction of gas flow, said gas flow being maintained at a superficial velocity such that the fluidized bed is free of bubbles over essentially the entire bed volume.
