ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Pulverulent solids, such as hot spent shale residue from the production of shale oil by the pyrolysis of oil shale, are economically and efficently cooled and initially moisturized by quench cooling the pulverulent solids with a coarsely distributed liquid followed by final moisturizing with a finely divided spray. The quench cooling and initial moisturization takes place in apparatus having agitation and blending sections or zones while final moisturizing takes place in a moisturizing section or zone where water or moisture is introduced through a finely divided spray. This staged moisturizing process is an improvement over the heretofore process of one stage moisturizing to desired levels with a fine spray only, since it provides for utilization of nozzle- clogging particulate-containing waste streams and effluents for initial moisturization of the spent shale.
