A process of treating wood to reduce the tannin staining of coatings subsequently applied includes the steps of providing a solution of a zirconyl compound in a carrier liquid such as water, applying the solution to a wood surface, and, drying the solution. The pore structure of the wood is modified or sealed so that staining of coating compositions applied subsequently over the surface is reduced. The process is particularly beneficial in cases where the coating composition is a clear or a light-colored latex paint, especially white. The preferred zirconyl compound is zirconyl acetate. The treating solution may be modified by addition thereto of a UV light protective compound and/or fungicide.
L'invention concerne un procédé de traitement du bois permettant de réduire l'apparition de taches dues à l'oxydation du tanin lors d'applications ultérieures de revêtements. Le procédé comporte les étapes consistant à prévoir une solution d'un composé de zirconyle dans un liquide vecteur tel que de l'eau; appliquer la solution à une surface de bois; et faire sécher la solution. La structure poreuse du bois est modifiée ou bouchée, ce qui permet de réduire l'apparition de taches sur des compositions de revêtement appliquées ultérieurement sur la surface. Le procédé est particulièrement bénéfique dans les cas où la composition de revêtement est une peinture de latex claire ou légèrement colorée, en particulier blanche. Le composé de zirconyle préféré est de l'acétate de zirconyle. La solution de traitement peut être modifiée par addition d'un composé filtrant les rayons UV et/ou fongicide.
