Stainless steel wire for reinforcing the upper portion (1) of tire casings (100), comprising in % by weight 0.02-0.2 of carbon, 6-10 % of nickel, 16-20 % chromium, the molybdenum content of the steel being 0-5 %, and the nickel, chromium and molybdenum content adding up to 23-28,5 %. The steel structure comprises at least 50 % by volume of martensite and is free from austenite or contains less than 50 % by volume thereof. The invention also relates to assemblies (620), reinforcing ply (62) and tire casings (100) comprising said stainless steel wire and a method of preparing said wire.
