The present invention relates to male flower specific cDNA sequences isolated from corn and stamen-specific promoter sequences of genes corresponding to such cDNA sequences. The invention further describes how the promoters of the invention can be used to direct expression of DNA sequences, such as for instance, a male-sterility DNA in plants, so as to obtain male-sterile plants.
