A planar fluorescent lamp (50) employing both hot cathode and cold cathode operation is described. The lamp includes a first transparent cover (98) bonded atop a metal body (52) with a serpentine channel (60) therein. The lamp body (52) is coated with an insulative coating (74) and the glass solder bead (108) bonds the cover (98) to the lamp (50) at its perimeter (55) and along the ridges (58) defining the serpentine channel (60). An alternative embodiment of the lamp (50) includes a second transparent cover (98A) bonded above the first transparent cover (98) enabling the fluorescent material (106A) to be contained in a second enclosure (100A), isolated from the source of light energy. A second alternative embodiment conceals the electrodes of the lamp (50) beneath the lamp body (52) and provides plasma slots to allow the concealed electrodes to energize the lamp (50). Another alternative embodiment utilizes a conductive transparent coating (114A) on the lamp cover (98) to allow the lamp (50) cover to supplement the lamp body (52) as a cold cathode (119, 121).
