A stand for a golf bag which is self-opening and self- closing when it is put down and picked up, respectively. The stand has a top, horizontal bar which can be rotatively fixed in a removable manner by means of a clip to the relatively rigid top cuff of the golf bag. There are two upper arms which extend downward from the top, horizontal bar of the stand, and two legs each of which extend downward from one of the two upper arms of the stand. There is also a push rod which has a push rod tail, and a push rod tail holder which is attached to the golf bag and through which the push rod tail is positioned so that it can slide freely therein. A horizontal crossbar is fixed to the two upper arms of the stand. Another clip is fixed to the upper end of the push rod and is positioned in a rotable and removable manner around the crossbar. A cross-panel is fixed to the two upper arms of the stand adjacent to where the legs of the stand extend from and has a slot therein. An elastic band, the tension of which can be adjusted, has one end anchored in the slot in the cross-panel, fits through a ring fixed below the cross-panel to the golf bag, and has the other end removably affixed around the second clip and crossbar.
