"STANDALONE CHECK TRANSACTION TERMINAL" Abstract of the Disciosure A standalone check transaction terminal includes a magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) check reader, a magnetic stripe reader, an embossed data reader, a display, a keypad, and a modem in an integrated stand-alone unit. The terminal is operative for gathering credit card or check data required for customer transactions at the point of sale, and for requesting transaction authorizations from a remote authorization source. The MICR check reader reads checking account data from the bottom of a check. The magnetic reader reads data from credit cards or from driver's licenses having a magnetic stripe. Customer identification information provided in conjunction with a check transaction may be entered using the keypad, or read directly from a driver's license having a magnetic stripe. An embossed data reader reads the embossed characters on a credit card. Once the check or credit card transaction data is collected by the terminal, the terminal calls a remote host computer and transmits an authorization request including the transaction data. Authorization indicia provided by the remote computer is received at the terminal and displayed on the terminal's display. The terminal also includes a plurality of serial communications ports that allow the terminal to be connected to serial point of sale devices such as a receipt printer, signature capture pad, personal identification number (PIN) pad, or other serial devices.
