ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A wire belt cartridge for a staple forming and driving tool employing a vertical front portion of a staple head base and a sheath to provide a space for a reciprocating former member and driver. A spring urges the base toward the sheath with spacer lugs maintaining a defined distance between base and sheath. A belt is fed through an opening in the base by the cartridge which protrudes into an opening and the belt advancing means is held inoperative by a forming tang during a portion of the forming and driving stroke to prevent movement of the staple wire during critical periods of such stroke. The former is moved during the forming and driving stroke through a path which permits former lugs to guide the formed staple down to a point adjacent the workpiece.
