ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A radiation detector measures the straight-up radiation from the bath of molten steel in a mold for continuous casting, to determine the sur face level on the basis of the inverse square-of-the distance law. This way, start-up is terminated automatically for a changeover to steady-state control of the steel level in the mold.
