ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A static inverter and a transformer for use in a static inverter are disclosed. The inverter comprises one or two switching semiconductor devices and a novel power transformer having a primary winding and first and second control windings associated with a linear magnetic core. A pair of serially arranged apertures partition the core into five localized branches. The second control winding is coupled via a central branch lying between the apertures, to the first control winding. At the initial part of each switching cycle, regenerative control action is provided to the associated switching device by the first control winding. As the cycle progresses, a pair of branches saturate, reducing the regenerative control action, and diverting the main flux through the central branch in a sense reversed to that provided by the first control winding. When the main flux is coupled to the second control winding, degenerative control action results, completing the turn off of the semiconductor device. The five branch arrange- ment provides a carefully matched control voltage to the associated semi- conductor devices, improving the life and reliability of the devices and enhancing the efficiency of the inverter.
