ABSTRACT This specification discloses an apparatus and method for controlling the air fuel ratio in an internal combustion engine in response to a feedback signal from an exhaust gas oxygen sensor. The sensor output signal is sampled periodically. After a given number of samples, a decision is made to change the air fuel ratio in either a rich or lean direction or to leave the fuel metering unchanged. Biasing, or non-stoichiometric air fuel operation, can be achieved by logic requiring a pre- determined number of samples to be either lean or rich.
