A co-axial cylindrical brushless DC motor (10) has an internal cylindrical stator (16) and an external rotor (11) containing permanent magnets (27). The cylindrical stator has a substrate of reinforced plastics covered by several layers of helically wound annealed steel wire (4) of about 1 mm diameter to provide a cylindrical layer of soft magnetic material just below the wound poles (W1, W2, W3) on or adjacent the outer surface of the stator (16).
