ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Polyamide monofilaments of heavy denier and having both high straight and high loop tenacity, are prepared by the coupled steps of melt-spinning, quenching, drawing and winding. The quenching involves passage of the monofilament through an air gap and water bath and the drawing is carried out in two stages. Pressurized steam is employed in the first draw stage to facilitate the drawing and to deorient the surface polymer of the monofilament,
