"STEAM DRIVE/OIL RECOVERY PROCESS INVOLVING HORIZONTAL BOREHOLES" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Vertical injection and production wells penetrating a heavy oil reservoir are interconnected with one or more generally horizontal boreholes. Each such borehole is packed with a particulate filling having only a limited permeability. The filling may, for example, consist of frac sand. The filling has sufficient permeability so that steam may be injected thereinto at conventional steaming rates without exceeding the formation fracturing pressure. However the permeability is sufficiently low so that there is a substantial pressure drop which occurs across the length of the borehole as the steam is pumped through it. When steam is so injected through the packed borehole, heat penetration into the surrounding reservoir is improved and the concentration of oil in the produced fluid is increased, relative to the results obtained if the borehole is not filled and provides a highly permeable passage for the steam.
