A steam generator for cooking devices has a vessel (112) and a heating device (128). Water to be evaporated (118) is contained within a free volume of an inner chamber of the vessel (112), which forms a water-guiding region. This water (118) is heated through a heating device (128) at least up to boiling temperature, whereby steam is generated that flows along a steam-guiding region of the vessel (112). The heating device (128) is advantageously a thick-layer heating device (130) applied to the surface area (126) of the vessel (112) on the water-guiding region. Both the water and the steam flowing past cool the heating device (128) as the water level drops.
