A b s t r a c t The fluidized bed is situated in a combustion chamber (1) formed from evaporator tubes (7) welded in sealing- tight relationship, the combustion chamber leading into a gas flue (14). The combustion chamber (1) is connected to the gas flue (14) of smaller cross-section via two inclined connecting wall surfaces (8, 9). Heater tubes (52, 53) bent into an L shape extend through the fluidized bed. Each shorter limb (58, 59) of the heater tubes (52, 53) extends substantially vertically while the other longer limb (60, 61) extends substantially horizontally. The horizontal limbs (60, 61) pass through a substantially vertical combustion chamber wall (4, 5) at the level of the fluidized bed and the vertical limbs (58, 59) pass through the free surface of the fluidized bed beneath the connecting wall surface (8, 9). The heater tubes (52, 53) are connected to a collector (55, 57) and to a header (54, 56) disposed outside the combustion chamber (1). As a result of this arrangement of the heater tubes the stresses therein due to uneven thermal expansion of the heater tubes remain within permissible limits.
