6 HW 5341 STEAM IRON AND BAFFLING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a steam iron with a controlled water valve and fill opening to an interior water tank molded as part of an iron plastic shell, the tank having a riser portion extending into the vertical handle part of the iron. A ported soleplate is provided with a steam generator and a cover over the soleplate to form steam distribution passages. The iron has purging means for cleaning which includes a substantially large valved opening in the tank bottom with a button on the handle for opening the valve by pushing on a slated rod that contacts the top of the valve to dump the tank water against the soleplate for creation of a large amount of steam to purge the iron. To this general known arrangement an improvement is provided in the plastic iron comprising a separate molded plastic baffle that is inserted from the bottom of the tank into the riser portion, the baffle having a transverse vertical wall extending completely across the tank. To the vertical wall, an integral horizontal wall is cantilevered on one side to provide a stop by abutting the underside of the tank top when inserted from the bottom. A pair of vertical channels is offset from the vertical wall on the other side thereof and the channels extend into the riser portion being spaced to provide an opening for handle-mounted components including the dump rod, the channels being designed to direct water into the tank. A slanted and offset aperture in the vertical wall for guiding ribs around it, the aperture providing a supported guide for the low end of the rod. The arrangement is such that a single molded plastic baffle is easily assembled from below, it directs fill water into the tank, it prevents water splashing from the fill opening, and it provides a support guide closely adjacent the dump valve through the aperture so that the rod is firmly supported and guided at its lower end for easy assembly from above.
