On a bridge construction site, or on other submerged foundation work, the H-beam piles are cut at a specific height above the ground. The piles are normally cut by divers using an electrical arc gouging process. This invention provides a means for cutting these beams with plasma arc electrodes, which are remotely controlled from a floating barge, or from similar structure above the water level. The cutting torches are mounted on a trolley. The trolley is lowered with a winch along the H-beam pile, to the desired depth. Then, each torch is energized and activated to cut both flanges and the web of the beam at the same plane. The new machine provides a method for cutting steel piles which is safer and more efficient than the conventional diving operation.
