The guide wire (5) has at least one coil (20) forming a helix (15) near the distal end (12) of the guide wire (5) to aid in the negotiation through tubular or vascular organs such as endoscopic retrograde or antegrade cannulation of the cystic duct. A removable clamp (35) is secured to the proximal end (14) of the guide wire (5) to allow the user to apply torsional and longitudinal force to steer the guide wire (5) into position.
