The invention relates to multipotent adult human stem cells which are characterized by the fact that they: i) have significant telomerase activity; ii) are of HLA phenotype class I negative; iii) have a normal karyotype; iv) are able to become quiescent; and v) are capable of sustained self-renewal during at least 130 doublings of the population.
