This invention is directed to stent delivery systems. In one embodiment, an apparatus for implanting a flexible, generally cylindrical, expandable stent (4), comprises a catheter (1) having distal and proximal ends, the catheter defining a central lumen (2) and a second lumen (3) extending therethrough and having two longitudinally displaced openings (6) extending from the second lumen (3) radially to the surface of the catheter (1); a flexible, expandable stent (4) having discrete proximal and distal ends (5), the stent being positioned circumferentially around the catheter (1) and the discrete ends (5) extending into the openings (6) to hold the stent (4) in position; and at least one release wire (7) positioned in and extending through the second lumen (3), the release wire or wires (7) fixedly containing at least one conically shaped pushing member (8) capable of causing a discrete end of the stent (4) to move radially as the release wire (7) is moved proximally.
