ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for determining the location of a discontinuity in a transmission medium such as an optic fibre is disclosed. Wave energy is transmitted through the medium at a predetermined modulation frequency and the phase difference of the transmitted and reflected waves are compared to provide a number of possible locations of the faults. The procedure uses a number of different modulation frequencies to determine uniquely locations of multiple faults in the optic fibre.
