The invention is a stereo sound expander which reproduces a realistic sound image in three dimensions. Prior art systems suffered from the disadvantage that the creation of virtual sound sources or loudspeakers gave rise to a tonal change. Attempts to correct the tonal change impaired the accuracy of the virtual sound source. The invention overcomes the problems experienced by prior art systems, by coupling modified and unmodified stereo signals. Thus by not modifying a Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) for one signal and equalising the HRTF for the other signal, a flattened frequency response is produced with no tonal changes, but with a high degree of spatial accuracy. Resultant output signals may be used to generate binaural signals or can be fed into crosstalk cancellers.

L'invention concerne un expanseur pour chaîne stéréophonique qui reproduit une image sonore réaliste en trois dimensions. Les systèmes antérieurs présentaient l'inconvénient que la création de sources sonores virtuelles ou d'enceintes acoustiques provoquait une modification tonale. Les tentatives pour corriger la modification tonale compromettaient la précision de la source sonore virtuelle. La présente invention résoud les problèmes rencontrés par les systèmes antérieurs en couplant des signaux modifiés et des signaux non modifiés. Ainsi, si l'on ne modifie pas une fonction de transfert relative à la tête pour un signal et si l'on égalise ladite fonction de transfert pour l'autre signal, on obtient une réponse de fréquence aplatie sans modification tonale mais avec une grande précision spatiale. Les signaux de sortie résultants peuvent être utilisés pour générer des signaux binauriculaires ou pour alimenter des sélecteurs diaphoniques.
