The present invention relates to intermediates useful in the synthesis of calcipotriol or calcipotriol monohydrate, methods of producing such intermediates and to methods of stereoselectively reducing the intermediates. Intermediates include compounds of formula III (see formula III) wherein X represents either hydrogen or OR2, and wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different and represent hydrogen, or a hydroxy protecting group, (see formula IVa) wherein X, R1 and R2 are as defined above, and ( see formula VIa) wherein X, R1 and R2 are as defined above.
