In word games, words are usually formed across the board from left to right, and across the board from top to bottom. Tiles are placed such that every contiguous group of tiles, when read either left to right or top to bottom, as appropriate, represents an acceptable word. Also the values of the letters may be fixed, and scores are calculated with respect to the ordinariness or else specialness of the squares they occupy on the board. In this invention, words are formed across the board from left to right, but the constituent letters are three squares apart; across the board from top to bottom, but the constituent letters are three squares apart; along a winding path like a stairway, with the constituent letters contiguous from one step to the next step. The value of a letter depends on its distance from a reference point for that letter. Scores are calculated by multiplying letter values that have a special line between them, and adding groups of multiplied letter values. Players' access to specific tiles is controlled by keeping a recording sheet for rate of use of the letters, and of the tiles, generally. Charts are provided to facilitate preparation of three-dimensional crossword puzzles based on this invention.
