A sterol compound represented by the following formula: Image wherein X is a halogen atom, R1 and R2 are the same or different, and are each a hydrogen atom or an alkanoyl group having 2 to 5 carbon atoms, and A is -CO- or -CH(OH)-. According to the present invention, a novel sterol compound (aragusterol C) is isolated from sponges of the genus Xestospongia, and novel sterol compounds are prepared by chemical modification of the above compound. Furthermore, known aragusterol A is modified chemically to give aragusterol C and novel sterol compounds. These compounds have more excellent antitumor activity than aragusterol A, and therefore are useful as medicines.

Composé stérolique répondant à la formule (I), dans laquelle X représente halogène; R<1> et R<2>, indépendamment l'un de l'autre, représentent hydrogène ou alcanoyle C2-5, et A représente -CO- ou -CH(OH)-. On a prévu un nouveau composé stérolique isolé à partir d'une éponge du genre Xestospongia ainsi qu'un autre nouveau composé stérolique obtenu par modification chimique du composé précité. On a également prévu l'aragustérol C et un nouveau composé stérolique obtenu par modification chimique de l'aragustérol A connu. Les composés obtenus présentent une activité antinéoplasique améliorée par rapport à celle de l'aragustérol A, et sont utilisables comme médicament.
