Abstract of the Disclosure New sulpho substituted stilbene compounds of the formula Image wherein X is a phenyl, naphthyl or 4-biphenyl radical, R1 and R3 denote hydrogen or certain non-chromophoric substituents including sulpho, R2 and R4 denote hydrogen or certain non- -chromophoric substituents, R5 is hydrogen, chlorine or sulpho and R6 is hydrogen or sulpho, the molecule containing one or two sulpho groups, a process for their manufacture as well as their use as fluorescent whitening agents for high molecular organic material are disclosed.
