A stone slab saw, a continuous flexible belt (29) is drivingly mounted to a plurality of sheaves (25, 26, 27, 28) rotatably mounted to a frame (24). A motor belt combination (80, 83) is operable to drive one of the sheaves (27) and move the belt (29). The frame (24) is vertically movable by a pair of racks (30, 31) and pinions (34, 35) driven by a motor (38). The belt (29) includes a plurality of abrasive pad holders (62, 63, 64) mounted thereto with each holder including an abrasive pad (61) having an out- wardly facing abrasive surface. A guide bar (39) mounted to the frame (24) is in tension guiding the belt (29) along a straight path and providing a rigid backing as the belt (29) is driven and lowered through the block of stone (20) cutting a slab therefrom.
