ABSTRACT A stop-light monitor device comprises a source of cur- rent, a lighting circuit connected with the source and hav- ing a stop-light switch actuated by the brake pedal. The lighting circuit has incandescent lamps which are energized when the brake pedal is depressed. A magnetic reed switch is connected to control a solid-state switch which in turn controls a pilot light that becomes illuminated when the solid-state switch is closed in consequence of the reed switch being opened. A current-sensitive means connected with the lighting circuit, opens the reed switch in response to normal energization of the stop lights, whereby the pilot lamp is energized. If a stop light burns out, the reed switch closes, opening the solid-state switch whereby the pilot light is extinguished, giving an indication of the mal- function. The advantage of the present invention over the devices of the prior art is that the monitor device can be connected to the existing wiring of the vehicle with very simple modification thereof, involving only breaking one exist- ing lead and connecting the resulting ends to two terminals of the device. In addition, malfunctions of the stop lights or their associated wiring are positively detected, regard- less of whether such malfunctions are in the nature of short circuits, or burn-outs in one or more of the bulbs.
