ABSTRACT In a telescoping mechanism such as a hydraulic ram, the facing cylindrical surfaces of the telescoping members are formed with grooves in which stop rings are fitted. According to the invention, the stop rings are separate from bearing elements acting between the telescoping members and have interengaging races inclined to the direction of relative telescopic movement. This arrangement ensures that, upon an impact between the stop rings, a substantial proportion of the impact is absorbed by expansion of one stop ring and contraction of the other stop ring.
