ABSTRACT A storage heating unit comprises an air-permeable heap of solid granular particles contained, as a heat-storage material, in a storage con- tainer. A source of heat is arranged, ahead of the heat-storage material, in a flow of charging gas supplied by a charging and discharging blower. The flows of charging and discharging gas pass in opposite directions through the entire height and length, and substantially through the entire cross section of the heat storage material, the material being of low-heat conductivity and finely-granular. At least the flow of charging gas circulates in a closed circuit. A second heat storage of smaller volume is arranged in the flow of charging gas after the heat-storage material but before the charging blower to protect the latter from overheating.
