A storage rack is loaded and unloaded from the top with pallets carrying articles to be stored in and retrieved from the rack. The rack consists of a series of spaced columns arranged in parallel rows defining wells accessible from the top; the columns have vertically spaced, upwardly facing sets of steps protruding to an equal extent towards the centre of the wells. A crane is horizontally movable over the rack and stoppable above a selected well; it has a hoisting block which can be lowered between and guided by the columns of the selected well; a pair of hooks are pivoted to the hoisting block for movement towards and away from each other between opened and closed position; a pair of Z-shaped pallet holding beams adapted to carry a series of pallets aligned in end to end relation are suspended from the hooks and clear the steps when in closed position. When the desired set of steps is reached, the hooks are opened causing spreading apart of the top portion of the Z beams to allow their hooking of the same unto these steps. The reverse operation is effected for unloading. The hooks can handle the Z beams to pick up the aligned pallets from and deposit them onto a supporting surface. The system is particularly designed for loading green concrete blocks into and unloading cured concrete blocks from a curing kiln housing the rack. Preferably, the green blocks are left in the stored position between the columns of the kiln just to attain sufficient compressive strength; they are then unloaded and directly stacked on the floor beside the rack within the kiln with the intermediary only of the pallets for completion of the curing process in the kiln; thus the number of columns and Z beams can be decreased without reducing the effective curing capacity of the kiln. Also, the provision of a Z beams accumulating device is no longer required.

Le bâti consiste en une série de colonnes espacées placées en rangées parallèles définissant des puits accessibles par le haut; les colonnes comportent des marches espacées verticalement et tournées vers le haut, et faisant des saillies égales vers le centre du puits. Un appareil de levage à charge suspendue peut être déplacé à l'horizontale au-dessus des étagères et peut être immobilisé au-dessus du puits sélectionné; l'appareil de levage est doté d'une moufle qui peut être descendue entre les colonnes du puits sélectionné et y être guidée; une paire de crochets articulés fixés à la moufle peuvent s'ouvrir et se refermer; deux poutres en forme de Z adaptées pour porter une série de palettes placées bout à bout sont suspendues aux crochets et sont dégagées des marches en position fermée. Une fois au-dessus de la marche choisie, les crochets sont ouverts et font écarter la partie supérieure des poutres en Z pour leur permettre de s'accrocher à ces marches. L'opération est effectuée en sens inverse pour le déchargement. Les crochets peuvent manutentionner les poutres en Z pour prendre ou déposer les palettes alignées sur une surface d'appui. Le système est particulièrement conçu pour charger des blocs en béton jeune et pour décharger des blocs en béton durci à partir d'un séchoir où se trouve le bâti. De préférence, les blocs de béton jeune sont emmagasinés entre les colonnes du séchoir pour leur donner une résistance à la rupture en compression suffisante; ils sont ensuite déchargés et empilés directement sur le sol à côté du bâti à l'intérieur du séchoir à l'aide uniquement des palettes, pour compléter le processus de séchage; le nombre de colonnes et de poutres en Z peut donc être réduit sans pour autant diminuer la capacité de séchage réelle du séchoir. De plus, le dispositif collecteur à poutres en Z n'est plus nécessaire à cette étape.
