The invention disclosed is a free standing stove unit for cooking adapted for use by a user in a wheelchair. The free standing stove unit comprises a top surface extending substantially horizontally at a height of about 30 inches (76cm)or less from a surface on which the free standing stove unit rest, a plurality of control transducers located at the front of the free standing stove unit within easy reach for the person in a wheelchair and a door opening and closing laterally such that with the door in the open position, the user may be in close proximity of the oven and able to reach inside the oven unimpaired by the open door.
