ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of diagnosing the transfer of data between an external serial tape and a disk memory in an electronic image processing apparatus having a controller for directing the operation of image processing means, the controller including a plurality of processors, a system memory, the disk memory, and an external storage device port for communicating with the tape for serially storing data, comprising the steps of creating a plurality of blocks of data for transfer to the tape via the external storage device port. transferring said plurality of blocks of data via the external storage device port to the tape, recreating said plurality of blocks of data in a plurality of verification buffers, reading the plurality of blocks of data from the tape via the external storage device port to a plurality of tape buffers, and comparing the plurality of blocks of data from the tape in the tape buffers with the data in the plurality of verification buffers in a parallel manner.
