A street sweeper comprises a vehicle mounted on ground wheels for running along a roadway with a two part pivotal boom arrangement carried on the vehicle and pivotal upwardly, downwardly, forwardly and rearwardly together with outwardly to respective sides. At the end of the boom is mounted a brush member which is suspended on the boom from the top of the housing with ground wheels at the front and rear of the housing so that the housing can rollover the ground. The housing carries a transverse cylindrical brush member rotating about an axis transverse to the housing and thus at right angles to the length of the boom. The housing floats by slots on a pin at the end of the boom so that its height is controlled by the ground wheels but its position and the orientation of the rotary axis of the brush is controlled by the position of the pin at the end of the boom. The brush member can thus be moved readily to required locations for a brushing action to sweep materials forwardly or rearwardly onto a roadway for collection by a conventional street sweeper.
