ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides antibiotics which are streptovaricinone C derivatives of the formula (III) Image and aldol condensation products thereof where Z is selected from a C1-12 alkyl, aryl, hydroxyalkyl, chloroalkyl, a alkenyl, ketonyl, furyl-oxoalkyl, thienyl-oxoalkyl, a phenyl-oxoalkyl, carbamylalkyl, benzyl, phenoxyalkyl, cyanoalkyl, phenethyl, benzoyl- oxyethyl, p-chlorophenyl-oxoalkyl, p-methoxyphenyl-oxoalkyl, p-nitrobenzyl, p-methylbenzyl, alkanoyl, benzoyl, benzenesulfonyl, an alkylsulfonyl, phenoxycarbonyl, thienyl carbonyl or an alkoxycarbonyl group.
