There is disclosed a runner (20) for a Francis-type hydraulic turbine (18) where each runner blade (38) has an outlet edge (44) with two stress relieving grooves (46) cut through the blade (38) from the outlet edge (44) adjacent the crown (36) and the band (40). The grooves (46) each present an opening (48) across the outlet edge (44) and the grooves (46) each extend a predetermined distance from the outlet edge (44) into the blade (38).
