A baseball type hat has a cap band with stretch side parts and a fixed length rear part between the stretch side parts. The rear part of the band is thickened relative to the side parts so that it protrudes forwardly internally of the hat. As such the rear part of the band which is pulled into position by the stretch side parts acts as a grip which fits at the base of the skull in the nape of the neck of a user of the hat.
