A stretcher includes at least one balloon filled with lighter than air gas. A patient support is suspended from the balloon. A gas control assembly is provided for controlling the buoyancy of the balloon by adding or releasing quantities of lighter than air gas to maintain floating in the air in equilibrium a combined weight of the patient support and a patient positioned on the patient support. Stretcher bearers need only control the movement of the stretcher through the air and bear no weight.
