ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system for controlling the thickness of steel strip in a tandem mill having at least three stands enables any error in strip thickness to be corrected in either or both of two stands downstream of the point where the error is sensed, so that an optimum form of error correction is obtained whatever the strip feed speed to the entry stand upstream of the sensor. The error sensed by the sensor is fed as an error signal back to adjust the roll speed of the strip entry stand to provide a constant volume throughput of strip through that stand. The signal is also fed forward to adjust the speed of the rolls in the first stand downstream from the sensor. A strip speed variable gain is adapted to vary the gain of this feedforward signal. At low strip feed speeds the gain is set so that tension arises in the strip between the entry stand and the first downstream stand whereby all the error is corrected at the first downstream stand. At high strip feed speeds the gain is set so that tension arises in the strip lying between the first and second downstream stands whereby all the error is corrected in the second downstream stand. At intermediate strip feed speeds the gain is set so that tension arises in the strip lying between the two sets of stands whereby a proportion of the error is corrected in the first downstream stand and a retaining proportion of the error is corrected in the second downstream stand.
