A stripping composition for paints, varnishes or lacquers covering a substrate, characterized in that it is composed of or contains: (A) 1 to 100 parts by weight of a mixture (A1) of at least one aromatic solvent selected from benzaldehyde, toluene, xylene and anisole and (A2) benzoic acid; (B) 99 to 0 parts by weight water; (A) + (B) representing in total 100 parts by weight. Specifically, (A) is composed of a commercial benzaldehyde which contains benzoic acid.
